Letter to the Editor: Why I’m Running For Congress

September 19, 2025
By: Sean Sublette

Sean Sublette

I’m often asked why a meteorologist would run for office. For me, the reasons are connected to what I remember growing up in Richmond. I have loved earth science ever since I was a kid in the ‘70s and vividly remember the thick haze that used to hang over the city every summer and the news stories about Kepone poisoning the James River. And I wondered why we could not do better. It turns out we could…

August 23, 2025
By: Heather Massey

As history tells it, “The native people were intimately connected to the river as the source of food, travel and defense from enemies. With fish, game, migratory birds and fertile ground, the river was life to them.” Only one thing was missing from those bucolic times: pollution. As the march of technology advanced, industrial contamination and toxic spills wreaked havoc on the James River. Where do things stand today and what does the future hold?

Denise Good Troubl

“What brings me out is the future of my grandchildren and my great grandchildren and bad things for the working class. People fought so hard to get us where we are, I was hoping we’d never go back, we’d just keep moving forward and make it better. But we’re going backward, and it’s getting worse.”

Amy Good Trouble

“I object to what’s going on. Every morning I wake up and open the newspaper like ‘What fresh hell will there be today?’ And there are so many issues that I’m absolutely horrified by that it’s hard to list them all. My partner is on Medicaid and they craftily cut it – for after the midterms. He has a large number of health issues, and it’s going to be very difficult for him to get healthcare. It’ll be really tough.”
