How to Help This Holiday Season

November 15, 2025
By: Colleen Phelps

Economic times are tough right now and more people than usual may be seeking out ways to get help for their families this holiday season.

If you’re able to offer donations or volunteer, we compiled a list for you to help make someone’s holiday brighter.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree is a great way to choose a child or senior citizen to adopt and shop for. Each person has a list of sizes and wishes. They ask that you focus on clothing, a few toys, etc.

You can choose an “angel” online or find “angels” on a tree at the Wegmans Customer Service desk or the Short Pump Town Center Clubhouse (the old food court) next to LL Bean. Gifts must be turned in by December 4.

Henrico Christmas Mother asks for cash so that they can do the shopping, but they use volunteers to help the families “shop” at the warehouse.

Holiday Hope 2025 Holiday Hope makes the holiday season brighter for individuals and families in HomeAgain’s Emergency Shelter and Community Housing Programs. By participating, you’re helping ensure that each of our clients receives age-appropriate, brand-new gifts to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

Housing Families First offers the chance to sponsor one child or more through their HFF Holiday Programs. They ask donors to “provide each child with a gift (or gifts) from their wish list valued at $50, a cozy new coat, fresh new pajamas, and a festive filled stocking to celebrate the joy of the season.” Gifts can be delivered; check their website for details.

Feed More asks for food, funds or time! Check the website to see how you can best help.

Henrico Community Food Bank is trying to collect 3400 boxes of cereal before December 15, so let’s help them meet that goal! It’s also easy to make a cash donation on the website. Please don’t let families go hungry this holiday season.

Little Hands Virginia are in need of diapers! They also accept new and gently used children’s items. Please check the link to see what they accept.

Many churches also have food and toy donation drives so check with your local church.

Every little bit adds up to a lot. Even if you only have $5 to give, it will make a big difference to someone in need. Happy holidays and help us walk the walk by being a Neighbor for Change!

“I want a better society for my kids. I’m passionate about healthcare. I’m a physician, my wife is in public health and the way healthcare is going right now is very frightening and I just want a candidate who is willing to go against what is happening on the national level. The vaccination piece is definitely scary, I think it’s really important to stay up to date with those things, the pandemic changed so much about how people trust the healthcare system, and while there are a lot of ways the healthcare system needs to improve, leadership from the top down needs to be solid and it’s just not solid right now”.

“I’m mostly concerned about the SNAP funding. Because in my profession, I know some people through Virginia Cooperative Extension who were doing nutrition education for SNAP beneficiaries, all of those programs were cut as kind of a ripple effect from the (Big, Beautiful) bill, but they lost those programs, which is important to me – nutrition information. I’m concerned about out healthcare, I’m concerned about what’s happening with immigration right now and for me personally, I’m soon going on Medicare, and I’m concerned with what’s happening with that. Things are so divisive, you can’t even really talk about issues in a calm way”.

“I am passionate about gun safety regulation. I am passionate about enforcement of the anti-trust laws. Those are two big ones for me. And also intelligent AI regulation and data center/environmental regulations. I have concern about the kind of Wild West style lack of regulation of artificial intelligence. I think we need to take a systematic thoughtful approach so that we targeted AI rather than just an uncontrolled profit for a few big companies”.
