United Methodist Church Announces Opposition to Data Center Overdevelopment in Central Virginia

November 6, 2025
By: Colleen Bohlman

On November 3rd, Goochland community members hosted a public informational program “Data Center Impacts Town Hall,” in Henrico County. The event was well attended by concerned residents and elected officials of three counties – Goochland, Henrico and Hanover – all facing the impacts of data center development projects. Attendees heard a powerful statement from United Methodist Church Leadership and a presentation by Tim Cywinski, Communication Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter.

The statement on behalf of the Bishop and Board of Church and Society for the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church detailed their solidarity with community members and their deep concern about the over-development of data center infrastructure in the Commonwealth.

Revered Lisa Sykes read an excerpt from the letter, signed by Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson, the episcopal leader of the Virginia Annual Conference, sharing:

“It is the opinion of the Board of Church and Society of Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church that continued building and using the resources of the Commonwealth of Virginia for new and expanded data centers is not sustainable, nor helpful for the long term health of our Commonwealth’s ecosystems: human, or animal, plant or mineral -and in the integration all of God’s earthly creation.”

Cywinski’s presentation highlighted environmental and economic concerns with data center development. He also took questions from the audience and emphasized the need for transparency from data center developers and the need for community voices to be respected.

  • Are you part of a group that could write a letter or make a resolution to share with elected officials on behalf of your membership? For example, a PTA or youth recreational sports league could write about the impact of pollution on children playing outside at school or at parks near these facilities.

“I want a better society for my kids. I’m passionate about healthcare. I’m a physician, my wife is in public health and the way healthcare is going right now is very frightening and I just want a candidate who is willing to go against what is happening on the national level. The vaccination piece is definitely scary, I think it’s really important to stay up to date with those things, the pandemic changed so much about how people trust the healthcare system, and while there are a lot of ways the healthcare system needs to improve, leadership from the top down needs to be solid and it’s just not solid right now”.

“I’m mostly concerned about the SNAP funding. Because in my profession, I know some people through Virginia Cooperative Extension who were doing nutrition education for SNAP beneficiaries, all of those programs were cut as kind of a ripple effect from the (Big, Beautiful) bill, but they lost those programs, which is important to me – nutrition information. I’m concerned about out healthcare, I’m concerned about what’s happening with immigration right now and for me personally, I’m soon going on Medicare, and I’m concerned with what’s happening with that. Things are so divisive, you can’t even really talk about issues in a calm way”.

“I am passionate about gun safety regulation. I am passionate about enforcement of the anti-trust laws. Those are two big ones for me. And also intelligent AI regulation and data center/environmental regulations. I have concern about the kind of Wild West style lack of regulation of artificial intelligence. I think we need to take a systematic thoughtful approach so that we targeted AI rather than just an uncontrolled profit for a few big companies”.
