The Importance of May Nivar’s HD57 Race!

September 9, 2025
By: Colleen Phelps

Mocktails for May

May Nivar’s campaign is in full swing. May is the Democratic candidate for HD-57, running against Republican incumbent David Owen.

Neighbors for Change hosted a “Mocktails for May” event at the campaign office last night to give people a chance to meet and talk to May.

“We have to hit David Owen hard and come out of the gate strong”, says May. Her campaign manager Arif Hasan stressed the importance of this race, “If we flip this seat, Republicans do not have a path to controlling the House of Delegates – it’s over for them”.

Both May and Arif stressed the significance of volunteers in this effort. The campaign is canvassing every weekend, and phone banking once a week. Unlike the campaign for governor, campaigns like this don’t have the same financial resources, so Arif stressed the need for people to get involved, “getting the word out about May and the importance of this race –people need to talk about it and get the word out organically”.

May is passionate about public education, raising teacher salaries, women’s reproductive freedom and access to abortion. “Some of these issues are very personal to me, giving back to the community is important to me, so I am just thrilled for this opportunity to give back in a different way which is to really hit at policy and the laws and anything we can do to strengthen and change laws to move us all forward”.

Neighbors who attended brought food items to donate to the Henrico Community Food Bank.

“What brings me out is the future of my grandchildren and my great grandchildren and bad things for the working class. People fought so hard to get us where we are, I was hoping we’d never go back, we’d just keep moving forward and make it better. But we’re going backward, and it’s getting worse.”

“I object to what’s going on. Every morning I wake up and open the newspaper like ‘What fresh hell will there be today?’ And there are so many issues that I’m absolutely horrified by that it’s hard to list them all. My partner is on Medicaid and they craftily cut it – for after the midterms. He has a large number of health issues, and it’s going to be very difficult for him to get healthcare. It’ll be really tough.”
