Protest 1/28 Hanover Courhouse ICE detention facility

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors opposed a proposal to convert a warehouse into a processing facility for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Board based their decision on land-use conflicts and the Department of Homeland Security’s lack of consultation with them on an appropriate location. Shortly afterwards,Jim Pattison Developments, the owner of the warehouse in question announced it would not proceed with the sale.

DHS Targets Hanover for ICE Facility

On 1/22/26, Hanover County officials reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contacted Hanover County about purchasing and rehabilitating a warehouse near Ashland to convert it into a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing facility. The Hanover County Board of Supervisors, which did not initiate the project, will discuss the matter at its 1/28 meeting at 6 PM and has thirty days to respond to DHS.

Virginia’s Migrant Farm Workers Face New Crises

Tejada is an Outreach Specialist with Central Virginia Legal Aid Society. Last year, the program assisted about 5200 H-2A workers, some of whom have been coming here to the same farms for twenty years. “If we don’t have those farmworkers, the farmers can go bankrupt. The farmers are very affected.”

Henrico Teen Detained by ICE

An HCPS high school student – whose family fled Afghanistan for safety reasons in 2021, was taken into custody by ICE last week.
According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, ICE agents arrested Arman Momand shortly after a court appearance at the Henrico County courthouse. Momand faced charges for a driving incident in December 2024, in which he was arrested by police for reckless driving, evading police and driving without a license.

“I want a better society for my kids. I’m passionate about healthcare. I’m a physician, my wife is in public health and the way healthcare is going right now is very frightening and I just want a candidate who is willing to go against what is happening on the national level. The vaccination piece is definitely scary, I think it’s really important to stay up to date with those things, the pandemic changed so much about how people trust the healthcare system, and while there are a lot of ways the healthcare system needs to improve, leadership from the top down needs to be solid and it’s just not solid right now”.

“I’m mostly concerned about the SNAP funding. Because in my profession, I know some people through Virginia Cooperative Extension who were doing nutrition education for SNAP beneficiaries, all of those programs were cut as kind of a ripple effect from the (Big, Beautiful) bill, but they lost those programs, which is important to me – nutrition information. I’m concerned about out healthcare, I’m concerned about what’s happening with immigration right now and for me personally, I’m soon going on Medicare, and I’m concerned with what’s happening with that. Things are so divisive, you can’t even really talk about issues in a calm way”.

“I am passionate about gun safety regulation. I am passionate about enforcement of the anti-trust laws. Those are two big ones for me. And also intelligent AI regulation and data center/environmental regulations. I have concern about the kind of Wild West style lack of regulation of artificial intelligence. I think we need to take a systematic thoughtful approach so that we targeted AI rather than just an uncontrolled profit for a few big companies”.
