May Nivar Needs YOU to flip HD57

July 28, 2025
By: Colleen Bohlman

May Nivar and Abigail Spanberger on the campaign trail.

Neighbors For Change is proud to stand behind May Nivar, Democratic Candidate for Delegate in HD57. May has been knocking on doors and talking with voters across the district, but with less than 100 days to go before the election, she needs our support to flip this seat blue.

Why is HD57 Important in 2025?

Three constitutional amendments are at stake: enshrining access to abortion, marriage equality, and voting rights restoration. This past session, the House of Delegates passed these amendments along with other meaningful legislation. According to state law, they must pass again in the next session to appear on the ballot so Virginians can vote for them. Flipping HD57 is crucial because if Democrats lose their razor-thin (51-49) majority in the House, these amendments will fail to pass in the House of Delegates. That means we’ll lose our opportunity to guarantee these rights for Virginians.

If Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D) becomes Governor, she’ll need a Democratic majority to accomplish her goals. And if voters elect Lt. Governor Winsome Earl-Sears, a robust Democratic majority can mitigate the impact of her MAGA agenda in Virginia.

Our current representative, Delegate David Owen, is a Republican, but HD57 voters supported Democrats at the National level in 2024 with 53.5% voting for Harris, 55.1% for Kaine and 51.1% for Mehta. That means HD57 is a flippable district. A Democratic victory here will help to hold or increase the Democrats’ majority.

Follow the Money

The fundraising data paints a clear picture: the GOP, special interest groups, and wealthy donors fund David Owen while May relies more on average citizens and other sources. Let’s break it down.

Delegate Owen’s main accomplishment seems to have been fundraising, not legislating. He’s an ineffective legislator – none of the bills he sponsored were signed into law and he routinely voted against his constituents’ interests. Yet he is well connected in the business world and, according to VPAP data, relies mainly on large contributions from PACs, special interest groups, wealthy donors, and the Republican party. He’s had only 18 donations of less than $100 this calendar year.

  • $200,000 – Republican State Leadership Committee
  • $194,400 – Republican Commonwealth Leadership PAC
  • $158,577 – Republican Party of Virginia
  • $146,858 – David Owen himself, his fourth largest donor

In contrast, May’s top four donors comprise only 26.6% of her fundraising total and represent a variety of sources:

  • $52,343 – New Va Majority
  • $22,598 – House Democratic Caucus
  • $17,000 – Chiang, Angela
  • $10,000 – Emily’s List

Since January 1, 2025, May has had 980 contributions of $100 or less (totaling $37,000). This reveals that regular folks are a big source of support.

How can we help May Nivar win this election?

When your opponent has access to deep pockets, fundraising is critical. Consider contributing to May’s campaign. Even a small donation can make a big difference for HD57.

Door knocking and talking to neighbors across the district will help voters learn about May Nivar. Get trained to get out the democratic vote. Phone and text banking are another way to support her. Sign up on her website to volunteer or host an event for her. Use Mobilize to search for volunteer events.

Amplify May’s message and raise her profile by following her on social media. Comment on/like her content. Share her content if it resonates with you. Find her on Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, and X. Talk to your friends about the importance of getting May Nivar elected to HD57.

Proudly display a May Nivar yard sign when permitted in your neighborhood. If you can donate money for a sign, every bit helps. If you have a prominent space for a much larger sign, contact her campaign to offer that up.

And finally, save the date for an N4C Event: Meet May & Stock the Campaign Office on Friday, September 12 at 6:30PM! Stay tuned for more details.

We hope you’re as excited about May Nivar as we are. Let’s flip this seat blue in November!

“What brings me out is the future of my grandchildren and my great grandchildren and bad things for the working class. People fought so hard to get us where we are, I was hoping we’d never go back, we’d just keep moving forward and make it better. But we’re going backward, and it’s getting worse.”

“I object to what’s going on. Every morning I wake up and open the newspaper like ‘What fresh hell will there be today?’ And there are so many issues that I’m absolutely horrified by that it’s hard to list them all. My partner is on Medicaid and they craftily cut it – for after the midterms. He has a large number of health issues, and it’s going to be very difficult for him to get healthcare. It’ll be really tough.”
